Senegal will host the ninth EITI Global Conference in Dakar on 13-14 June 2023 at the Abdou Diouf International Conference Centre (CICAD), a first on African soil.
His Excellency Mr Macky SALL, President of the Republic of Senegal welcomed the choice to hold the EITI Global Conference in Senegal, a country that has been implementing the EITI since 2013: “I am pleased that Senegal is hosting this important event, which will bring together all global stakeholders working to improve transparency and good governance in the extractive sector. Senegal has made remarkable progress in implementing the EITI and looks forward to sharing its experience. I remain convinced that the exploitation of natural resources must benefit the people. And all producing countries must make this a priority to ensure a stable and sustainable extractive sector”.
General registration opens today for the EITI Global Conference 2023, which will bring together more than 1,000 stakeholders from the extractive and energy sectors under the theme “Transparency in Transition”. The forum will review progress in publishing and using open data to inform decision-making and public debate on responsible natural resource management.
“The topics we will be discussing at this conference are extremely relevant,” said the Chair of the EITI Board, the Right Honourable Helen CLARK. “The extractive and energy sectors are changing rapidly as demand for access to clean and affordable energy increases. Without robust public debate and good governance, the energy transition risks leaving vulnerable groups behind. The transition can and will lead to improved energy access and economic opportunities for all”.
Marking the 20th anniversary of the EITI and the 10th anniversary of Senegal’s membership of the EITI, this inclusive forum will be an opportunity to celebrate the achievements in natural resource transparency and multi-stakeholder dialogue in the 57 EITI implementing countries and beyond. It will be a time to look ahead to examine how the EITI must adapt to an ever-changing energy landscape and growing demand for an open and accountable sector.
Founded on the belief that a country’s natural resources belong to its citizens, the EITI was established in 2003 with the vision that greater transparency of natural resource revenues can reduce corruption, help transform economies and raise the living standards of citizens in resource-rich countries.
Twenty years after the creation of the EITI, the 2023 Global Conference will bring together stakeholders from around the world to continue to build on the progress made on transparency in the context of the energy transition.
The EITI Members’ Meeting, which is composed of representatives from implementing countries, supporting countries, civil society organisations, companies and institutional investors, will be held prior to the conference on 12 June 2023 to elect the EITI 2023-2026 Board.
